This and That

I don't know what came over me this morning but I thought it would be a good idea to make chicken soup. Even though my husband doesn't like chicken, Dimitri never rarely eats anything but macaroni, cheese or chocolate croissants, and my cooking is notoriously appalling unpredictable. I certainly wouldn't be taking on such a Mrs Beeton role if I could find somewhere that sold Campbells tinned soup.

As Dimitri is unlikely to eat chicken soup in the raw, I'm considering pouring some soup over macaroni and then cunningly disguising it with cheese...Cunning as a fox with two tails?
The husband will have to eat what he is given.

Last Sunday we ventured to the botanical gardens for the first time in many, many weeks, now the temperature has dropped I would like to get Dimitri out walking again. As soon as we turned on to the main road to the gardens Dimitri let out an "wahhh!' of dissent. Aha, I thought, here we go. What I said was "we'll just take a quick look, if you don't want to walk we'll just go home". As we parked there was another, more prolonged "waahhhh!" from the back of the car, I said "we can go and take some photos with the camera", "huh-huhhh" came a happy reply.

As soon as we were through the gates Dimitri plonked his bum down on a seat, demanded water and generally tried to distract us from going any further. Luckily, there were two groups of scouts conveniently spaced further along one path, they were making enough hubbub to persuade Dimitri that they were worth checking out. Of the older group he caught the eye of a couple of girls who started waving at him. He's a bit of a flirt flashing a smile with a twinkle in his eye. I suppose I may have thought how sad it is that Dimitri is not joining in. But on the other hand, he is a people watcher, he enjoys to be the spectator on the sidelines, so you know, it's okay.

Dimitri took these two pics amongst others, I slung the strap of the camera round my neck tourist style to prevent any accidents, Dimitri squeezed in between me and the camera. He knows to look through the viewfinder (thanks in part to Fisher Price's View Master) gropes around for the shoot button and fires away. Meanwhile I tried to remain in a relatively upright position and prevent my head from being separated from my body by said camera strap.

I took a couple of shots myself, I've had the camera a year and still don't know what all the buttons a for...

I'd like to know how people get butterflies to stay still long enough to take a photo...

Wow beautiful pictures! I can tell you've got the eyes of an artist.
I loved reading this post. I'm so glad you are back. I really missed your voice.
And by the way, I still didn't get over the fact that Mr. Dimitri takes pictures.

Looks like you got one butterfly to 'pose.' (And that you were able to maneuver with wearing the camera plus having Dimitri 'intercede.')

Charlie is not so direct in communicating his interest in observing other children, though I do think he is curious and likes to 'check them out' (from a distance that he considers safe).

And I am liking your differing phrases/responses to the 'wah.'

Ah, and what was the household's assessment of your soup?

Erika - Thank you:) I didn't imagine Dimitri would ever be interested in using a camera, I remember a time when he didn't really notice anything unless it was at eye-level and at a close distance...It's still kind of hit and miss, but something we can work on I think.

Kristina - ah, that's the one shot of many that came out ok and Dimitri didn't help with that one, we would have fallen in the bushes:)

That you use the word "safe" is interesting, Dimitri was a lot more insecure physically and sensory-ly (is that a word?) and used to pull his arms in and cringe when other children came too close. He likes to touch other people but doesn't like them to touch him. Been reading your posts about communication and translation, they make a lot sense to me.

Soup: husband no comment, Dimitri no way, me I eat anything:)

K-floortime lite mama - it's not always so charming (Athens is a lot of concrete and pollution)but we try to get out to nice places:) Loved your post on music.

All 4 photos are lovely! I agree, for D it is a viable start towards more. The soup description was appealing to me! Not believing you are not productive in the kitchen! Barbara

Those pictures are lovely! I tried to take a picture of a butterfly in our yard a few days ago but only had my phone on hand...needless to say it wasn't that great! It is so nice to get out now that the weather is a little nicer (here too). I saw on your last post about Pingu and had to laugh because we just discovered this on Netflix and my boys LOVE it! KNOCK KNOCK!! haha

TherExtras - oh, I am productive in the kitchen, it's just not always edible:)

J D C & N - the joys of Pingu:)

athanasia - thx, I'm learning slowly but surely..

KWombles - thank you, will pop over to check out the directory (although if I start reading any more blogs I may stop functioning in the real world altogether!)
