Still Here

View from the roof yesterday evening

Still here but been kind of occupied (supposedly being creative painting - but that's another story). But just to prove we are still here, a couple of photos of Dimitri on the roof.

For some reason Dimitri always seems to be wearing the Spiderman t-shirt in photos. He does have other clothes I assure you and he does wear them. Just not when in photos apparently. Fun game - "kissing" the plastic awning thing (yes, he does sometimes "draw pictures" with saliva. Is it bad to mention this?)

Still sorting through the AAC and VOCA info, found out the Grid 2 in Greek is around 500 euros (booh!).

One day last week Dimitri got home from school as per usual. Usually I have food ready prepared as he comes home pretty hungry, but as lunch was to be an "egg in a basket" there was a little waiting to be done.

Not happy to wait, Dimitri got his school bag, opened it up with a little assistance, found his iPod, and using the newly added app "Tap to Talk" that I'm trying out,  said "I'm hungry"! A new phrase for Dimitri, for whom "I want" followed by item required is the usual means of communication. He may not actually know the phrase I'm hungry, but used it as it automatically leads to food items, but even so, the "train of events" leading to the food items provides modelling of the appropriate use of phrase, no? This is the app which requires a years subscription to be able to have access to more phrases and make alterations. I'm still considering, as it does run nicely from one phrase to a selection of following phrases or words. But in the end I'm not sure if a more complex program can be adapted better to suit his needs. One thing is for sure, he is more than ready for more phrase and word choices.

Hooray for Dimitri-- that is so exciting!

I've been thinking about what would most benefit Charlie aac-wise and the idea of a device that can be quite readily adapted and individualized stands out. Has he been using the iPod touch more at school, with teachers and therapists?

It must be a good shirt!

That is, has Dimitri been using the iPod touch more at school?

Hurray for that appropriate statement! Can I assume you took photos whilst he participated in the egg-in-the-basket? Thanks for the shout-out! Barbara

Kristina- it's quite confusing finding the right equipment, if proloquo2go was in Greek I would consider it, but still not 100% sure, I think maybe other programs can be adapted better to suit Dimitri (not sure though!). (and there is a new HP "slate coming out I think?)

The one continuing problem with the iPod, Dimitri thinks it's amusing to make the main screen icons "wobble" and move them around. And he doesn't appreciate me making a sudden dive for the iPod in the hope of saving apps from deletion...

He is using it at school, not sure how much, his SLT is quite enthusiastic about it!

TherExtras - I didn't manage to take pics of Dimitri, I was in "constant vigilance" mode. You may have advice on this somewhere, Dimitri struggles with balance, as such, standing at a counter or cooker and manipulating objects at the same time doesn't really work. Walking is easier than standing in one spot. I set things up for him at the table which is fine, much harder to be spontaneous though, and that must impact independence.

(and your welcome:))

I don't want to come across as too strange for asking this, but could I contact you privately somehow?

Setting things up for him helps him learn the process. When is fairly able to do most of what you set-up, leave one item for him to seek. Might that work? Understandable why you did not photo him! I cannot help but think about whether some well-fit orthotics might improve his balance. ? The 'walking' you do with him in the community, and all exercise is important for his 'balance' to develop to his potential. Barbara
